University of Catania is involved in the RI with a long scientific expertise in the main areas of radio access networks, and optimized management and orchestration of network resources.
In the first area, the research team of University of Catania has focused on open architectures for programmable edge servers massively accessed by IoT devices through local reconfigurable networks based on low-power technologies (e.g., ZigBee, SigFox, LoRa).
As regards optimized management and orchestration of network resources, the UniCT research team has a large expertise in contexts that are mainly related to network edge scenarios. More in depth, the most recent research activities of the team have been focused on the definition of smart techniques of load balancing and energy saving for edge nodes to guarantee performance requirements mainly related to latency and packet losses. These techniques, which are mainly based on reinforcement learning and federated learning, have also been customized for special scenarios, like vehicular networks and remote areas that are very far from the structured Internet, and where the best way to provide connectivity and edge computing is by means of Flying Ad-Hoc Networks (FANET).
In order to check performance of the proposed techniques on the field, the UniCT research team has leveraged on its technological expertise, mainly gained thanks to the participation into numerous national and international research programmes, to realize an open edge-computing platform for testing. It has been realized with four servers and two small cells, and will be the core of the open laboratory that is the subject of this project.
In large, the research team has strong background in the field of wireless networks, IoT, edge networking, SDN and NFV. Furthermore, it has played leading roles (with either UNICT or CNIT affiliation) in several FP7 and H2020 European projects like, NEWCOM++, IMSK, NEWCOM#, CONVERGENCE, INPUT, OFELIA, and COGLO.
