Spain
The Spanish node brings direct benefits by enhancing access to cutting-edge data technologies and research capabilities. A key advantage lies in open access to foundational AI models, including those developed by the Trillion Parameter Consortium, through competitive calls. With current leadership in advanced AI models dominated by US-based firms, Spain's engagement in SoBigData helps level the playing field by granting researchers access to resources typically unavailable to many Spanish institutions.
This node enables multidisciplinary research across various fields, including climate science, healthcare, urban planning, and the social sciences. By integrating diverse datasets and analytical tools, SoBigData ERIC facilitates cross-disciplinary innovation and fills crucial gaps where commercial platforms fall short. Furthermore, it supports initiatives to mitigate biases in AI-based technologies, such as language-based performance disparities that disadvantage Spanish and other languages in the European language family. Planned data anonymisation services will also enable the safe use and sharing of datasets for training trustworthy AI-based models. These capabilities ensure that Spain not only benefits from but actively contributes to a robust, equitable, and forward-looking European data infrastructure.
