Netherlands
Given the investments made in this field by the Netherlands over the last decade, several services are ready to be contributed to the SoBigData Service Catalogue. In the initial offering the Netherlands will provide SANE to the SoBigData Service Catalogue. SANE is currently a national service in which researchers, through ODISSEI and CLARIAH, can access high resolution surveys, administrative and media data through a secure compute environment provided by SURF. By elevating this to the SoBigData Catalogue it should be possible for researchers all over Europe to benefit from this same service and move the TRE landscape toward further consolidation. SANE is cited and referenced in the ENTRUST TRE catalogue and piloting cross-national implementations including other SoBigData partners such as GESIS. This would open new research opportunities and means by which to access diverse data within secure yet computationally flexible environments.
The Netherlands is also a forerunner in the ethics of AI and Computational Social Science having established the Ethical Reflection and Consultation Tool. Under the leadership of Juan Manuel Duran, the team at TU Delft have become experts in supporting greater reflection and ethical oversite. The speed of methodological and technical developments and the innovative application of them to social research questions means that supporting the creation of best practices and broad consultation is vital. The work done by the Dutch node has been central to that of SoBigData and nationally concerted effort has been placed on ensuring that these services are scalable and valuable to researchers working at the cutting edge of social science research. In addition to these services, there are many mature services which could be readily added to the SoBigData Catalogue in the foreseeable future, including the PORT Data Donation Software, the MetaSyn R Package, and the Mass Online Experiments Platform.
